Actress Melissa McCarthy headed to Chicago to give back to her Aunt Connie and Uncle Jim, both retired police officers. We worked to created an upstairs retreat where Connie could cook and entertain, and a downstairs man cave equipped with all the comforts Jim deserved.

WE’RE IN THE WRONG HOUSE

Melissa and her cousin Jenna pulled it off—Connie and Jim had no idea what was happening, to the point they couldn’t believe it was really their house!

A MAN CAVE FOR A HERO

After Jim was injured on the job, he spent most of his recovery time downstairs in the den in his favorite chair, watching his favorite Chicago sports teams. We weren’t going to try to convince him to give up his allegiance to Da Bears, but we did have to get him a new chair. And you know what they say, if you give a man a new chair … you might as well give him a new man cave. We totally redid the downstairs space so Jim could sit in his new chair, watching his new TV, listening to his new record player play his old favorites with his all-time favorite girl, Connie. (Because some things shouldn’t change.)

CONNIE’S NEW KITCHEN KINGDOM

Connie and Jim liked to hang out together in the upstairs kitchen and living room, but the rooms were divided by an unsightly wall, which closed Connie off during family gatherings. We did what we do best: we took down the wall, opened the space and gave her a massive kitchen island full of storage and—best of all—seating, so Connie’s always part of the conversation.

CHASING THE CLOUDS AWAY

Connie and Jim’s house had great opportunities for clear sight lines and natural lighting—we just had to let the light in. By clearing out those dividing walls, the light from the big, beautiful windows was able to reach the whole space, making even an overcast day feel light and refreshing.
