This young couple wanted to go from a temporary basement situation to a bright, quirky home of their own. Once they settled on this 100-year-old fixer-upper, we got to work bringing their eccentric tastes to life. High on their priority list was a large, open kitchen where friends can gather ’round for game night and snacks—and, as our deadline was looming, they reshuffled their finances to add a solarium-like living room with cacti galore. Rounding out their dream home: a work-friendly breakfast nook and intricate herringbone flooring throughout.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
FLOWER POWER
The foyer wallpaper (called “It’s a Rose” by Candace Kaye Design) was a deliberate bold choice, based on the whimsical mood boards Katie and Mark created for us. Bonus: It complements the navy tones of the colorful kitchen cabinets—another of the couple’s must-haves.
PERSONAL SPACE
Speaking of wallpaper: Katie and Mark were adamant about incorporating “weird old stuff”—their words, not ours—throughout the home. An obvious solution was to use their existing knickknacks as decor, but we also unearthed a swath of charming original wallpaper during the demo and hung a framed scrap of it in the kitchen. Together, these old and new mementos help tell the couple’s unique story.
HERRINGBONE HOMAGE
This home’s original herringbone flooring was probably beautiful…a few decades ago. Out with the discolored, worn-down wood and in with an updated nod to that original feature. At the eleventh hour, Laurentian Hardwood helped us install a gray-ish shade of white oak hardwood in that classic herringbone pattern.
