Janet and Kristopher moved closer to family while thinking they’d move again soon, but three years and two boys later, they’ve fallen in love with the house—but maybe not its outdated quirks. We modernized the kitchen, fixed structural problems in the kids’ playroom, and updated the look and feel of the living room to give them an open, welcoming home they can fall in love with all over again.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
MORE COLORS THAN A CRAYON BOX
The kids’ room was a former outdoor space that hadn’t been closed in properly, so we spent a good bit of time fixing the floors and sealing it up to prevent future water damage. Once that was done, we went for bright colors that would encourage the boys to have fun and spark their imaginations: a light green on the ceiling, large-scale leaf-print wallpaper, and these standout blue sliding barn doors that easily help Janet and Kristopher keep an eye on the kids. (Check out the paint colors and wallpaper print in the Resource Guide above!)
GOING VERTICAL
Janet and Kristopher’s dining room had become a makeshift storage space, so we created actual storage with a cabinet-lined wall and additional counter space. To tie the design together, we went with vertical shiplap that—thanks to Drew’s math skills—aligned perfectly with the light fixtures. We then carried the vertical shiplap into the kitchen, where we installed it on the new vent hood.
ISLAND OF COLOR
Janet told us she wasn’t afraid of color, but still preferred a mostly white kitchen. No problem at all—that’s what an island is for, right? (In addition to storage, cooking, seating …) Introducing this blue-green hue in the kitchen allowed us to tell a similar color story in the kids’ room, giving the home a natural flow it had been lacking.
