Our Birthday Celebration in Mexico Left Us “Breathless”

Thanks to our family and friends, we turned 41 in paradise.

Turning 41 might not be a major milestone like the big 4-0, but it can still be just as memorable! To celebrate our birthday on April 28, we rounded up 20 of our closest friends and family members and headed to the Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa in Mexico for six days of beachfront birthday bliss. As if being surrounded by our favorite people weren’t enough, we lucked out with absolutely perfect weather—it was warm, sunny, and clear every day, with cool and breezy nights. Here’s what we loved most about spending our birthday week at this sophisticated luxury resort.

We Stayed Active

Drew rarely takes a “vacation” from exercise, and this trip was no exception. He did Pilates and yoga in the morning by the resort’s infinity pool, which was just a few short steps from our suites, and went golfing with one of his best friends from high school, Brad. Also on our group’s itinerary: lots of beach volleyball! Between the activities and the amenities on offer, there was something for everyone in our party.

We Hit the Water

We were in paradise, so of course we took advantage of our stunning surroundings. Without a doubt, the highlight of our outdoor excursions was chartering a private yacht and spending a day at sea. We toured around Cabo’s famous rock-formation arch and stopped whenever we wanted to swim, hang out in the water, or attempt to paddleboard.

We Still Watched Game of Thrones

Why yes, we do watch TV shows other than our own—we’re obsessive Game of Thrones fans and were a little bummed going into this trip knowing we would have to miss the second episode of the final season. But Breathless stepped up and gave us a live broadcast via a private screening in one of the hotel’s private event rooms, the Senses Suite. It was a fully catered (down to the themed cocktails!) screening exclusively for our group, and it was amazing. We were so relieved and so happy that we didn’t have to avoid the GoT spoilers come Monday morning.

We Got Pampered

In addition to being treated to truly luxurious suites, our family surprised us with a morning at the Breathless spa, Relax Spa by Pevonia. And relax we did! We each indulged in an 80-minute deep-tissue massage, which was much-kneaded. (Ha!) All that pampering really helped us look and feel our best for the rest of our stay.

We Ate Farm-Fresh Food 

For our official birthday dinner, we all gathered at Flora’s Field Kitchen, a 10-acre organic farm that’s a short drive north from the resort. What a magical place! We enjoyed a family-style meal that included beet salad, bruschetta, pizza, chicken and fish, and mashed potatoes—all super fresh. Sharing a meal with the people we love most, in a breathtaking setting, cocktails (and mocktails) in hand? We couldn’t have asked for more as we enter a new year of our lives!
