- Wait until a new model is released: When retailers release a new model of an appliance, the older models will drop in price to make room for the new inventory. If you can wait it out until the newest version of your appliance is out, then you can get a great discount on the previous one.
- Ask for price matching: Many big-box stores and local appliance shops will price match other stores in the area. When you go in-store to shop, simply pull up the lower price from another retailer’s site (just make sure it’s the exact same appliance and model you’re shopping for), and politely ask the store clerk if they offer price matching. That way, you know you’re getting the best price possible.
- Consider buying lightly used or open box: If you don’t mind a lightly used appliance, then this is a fantastic way to save on cash. Sometimes, you bring an appliance home and it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t match your other appliances, or something else just isn’t what you pictured it to be. In these cases, these lightly used models are taken back to the store to return, but are then offered at a discounted price because they’d already been opened. You can rest easy knowing that it’s still working properly and in great condition, just priced 15% to 50% lower than a brand-new, unopened appliance!
- Buy off-season: Buying an appliance off-season is another great hack to score your appliance for less. For example, shopping for an air conditioner in the winter may have better pricing since folks are more likely to be shopping for water heaters and furnaces. And vice versa—furnaces and boilers will likely be less expensive in the summer months since people will be buying things like grills and air conditioners.
